First Draft Narration

My persuasive argument thesis is: We should not always follow majority opinion.

1. What do people already know about my topic?

Everyone thinks that we should determine following majority opinion and it's the right decision. They usually don't really care about side-effects which occur because of following the majority seriously, so a lot of problems are still left. Students follow trends, people in corporations follow idea of the majority, and citizens follow opinion which most people agree. Of course they might be a good way if there's no other choice. However, nowadays people follow majority opinion too often not considering themselves.

2. What research has already been done about my topic?

http://www.redandblack.com/opinion/majority-rule-not-always-ruling-right/article_efd38826-2938-5b98-ae72-e332ca5f00ea.html - the example that 'majority' was wrong. The article also debate a red-hot issue "gay marriage".
http://www.alt-market.com/articles/1295-the-qmajority-opinionq-is-an-illusion - good example and opinion that majority opinion could be wrong and the rationale to explain why the majority is usually wrong.
http://jaxairnews.jacksonville.com/opinion/blog/419657/mmclarke/2010-10-02/conundrum-majority-opinion - good historical examples that the majority was totally wrong. It might be a  good one to support my opinion.
http://theantinietzsche.wordpress.com/2011/10/28/jean-jacques-rousseaus-the-social-contract-the-will-of-the-people/ - Rousseau claimed that a majority vote is always binding on all the others.

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/80933-the-majority-is-never-right-never-i-tell-you-that-s - Henrik Ibsen said that the majority is never right. Also Henri Lamoureux said that the public-the majority- is who make an innovation and revolution.

3. What are the implications of my argument (What if I'm right? What if I'm right and people ignore me?)

People will consider carefully when they follow majority opinion and they will realize only chasing what most people pursure is dangerous. They will be able to realize the importance of uniqueness of themselves and also problems which were caused by following trends which the majority created. If people ignore me, they will continue making a decision wrongly not considering the minority which could be real true as same as nowadays. Moreover, the problems caused by following the majority would never disappear.

My Narration

Since many people have discussed logicality of majority opinion, the controversies are still incediary. Some people argue that the majority rule is always right and the best way, but others claim the majority is usually wrong. Rousseau, who is one of the most famous french writer/philosopher, wrote that "a majority vote is always binding on all the others." Say, will of the majority creates basic rules. He insisted the importance of majority rule. However, Henrik Ibsen, who is norwegian play wright, claimed the majority is not always right. He said, "The majority is never right. Never, I tell you! That's one of these lies in society that no free and intelligent man can help rebelling against. Who are the people that make up the biggest proportion of the population -- the intelligent ones or the fools?" What he told shows his opinion obviously. Moreover, Henri Lamoureux who is canadian writer/essayist wrote that who make an innovation or revolution is the public, say, the majority not the isolated heroes that are usually leaders. Like this, for many years, a lot of philosophers and writers conflict with a topic of majority rule.

To look at an example of an article that Vaughn Wilson wrote. It says even though many conservatives claim the majority of Americans are against gay marriage and thus gay marriage should be banned, it should not be law right. The writer says that there are a few times when American "majority" was wrong from the past. One can look at the issue of civil rights for example. If America had gone with simple majority rule, then the majority of white Southerners would have voted to keep segregation in the 1950s and 1960s. He continues saying that simple majority rule should be accepted carefully. The article claims the government should consider if it's right or wrong no matter how many people agree or disagree with a statement. Also, Brandon Smith wrote that majority is an illusion. He insists that the majority is usually wrong because those people who claim to be a part of the majority are sometimes ill informed and do not have all the facts at their disposal. Furthermore, he said they are too open to exploitation, and too easy to sway and each individual has right to say and be accepted by others  regardless of what the so-called mainstream believes.

Of course it's important to know convenience of majority rule. However majority rule resonates with daily routine of students and artists either. Recognizing the importance of determining rightness of majority opinion is getting more and more significant today that people value respecting each identity as manners.
